Understanding and Leveraging Stress in Uncertain Times

The relationship between stress levels, productivity and health is well known. The recent years have contributed to higher levels of stress through the uncertainty, change, transitions, and the many unknowns which we all face. Languishing is the new ‘normal’ and those languishing, if left unchecked, are at risk for slipping into more serious and critical states of anxiety and depression.

This session is designed to help individuals understand stress, both acute and chronic. Cognitive skills such as judgment, critical thinking, problem solving, and creativity become impaired under chronic stress. Physical and mental health issues may be triggered or amplified, such as headaches, muscle tension, irritability, insomnia and anxiety. Productivity, engagement, and focus may also suffer.

In this talk Marla brings her decades of experience as a stress and wellbeing expert, to share ideas on the role that stress plays in our lives and how we can best leverage it through our evolving transitions. In addition to learning research-based strategies, participants will gain insight into the latest research on our perceptions of stress and how stress can be enhancing vs. debilitating.

In this session participants will:

  • Define “stress” and understand the stress response in the context of our current times
  • Clarify the relationship between stress and our physical, mental/emotional well-being
  • Reflect on how we think about stress and why it matters
  • Understand the 3 ‘C’s of Hardiness and their relationship to stress
  • Practice tips and strategies for effectively leveraging the ‘upside’ of stress – in the moment – and proactively for long term resilience
